Poppy Seed Halwa

Also known asPosta ka Halwa

Ingredients

  • 200 grams poppy seeds
  • 150 grams sugar
  • 100 grams ghee
  • 1 cup milk
  • 100 ml water

Preparation time

  • 30 minutes

Cooking time

  • 30 minutes

Cooking Instructions

  • Soak the poppy seeds in water for 15 – 20 minutes
  • After 20 minutes, strain the poppy seeds from water and grind it in a mixer to make a fine paste
  • Take a non-stick pan (kadhai) and put it on a gas oven
  • Add ghee to the pan and let it heat
  • Once the ghee is heated, add the finely ground poppy seed paste to the ghee
  • Start stirring the poppy seed paste on medium heat till it is nicely fried (It takes a little time to get that golden-brown color and the color of the paste to change from white to brown)
  • Keep frying till the mixture is completely brown and the ghee is separated from the poppy seed paste
  • Once this paste is fried, remove it from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes
  • After 10 minutes, put it back on the oven and add sugar and mix it nicely to the paste

  • Once the sugar is mixed well with the paste, add milk and water together constantly stirring the mixture in the pan; Continuous stirring is required because it does not let the milk froth and boil and prevents the poppy seed paste from sticking on to the pan
  • Gradually the poppy seed will absorb all the milk, water and separate the ghee in the pan
  • Check the consistency of the halwa, it should not be too liquidy or too dry; it should be of medium consistency
  • Once ready, remove from oven and the halwa is ready to serve

Note

  • Dry fruits can also be added but to retain the authenticity of the recipe, I make it without the dry fruits
  • Only milk if added without the water gives a different color to the halwa
