Cooking Instructions

There are 2 steps involved in cooking the Masala Dal. In the first step we will cook the dal and in the second step we will temper it.

So, let’s begin!

Step 1 – Cooking the dal

  • Wash the dal nicely under running tap water
  • Once the dal is washed and cleaned, keep it soaked in water for 10 minutes
  • After 10 minutes transfer the dal to a pressure cooker
  • Add 2 cups of water to the dal
  • To this dal now add the chopped onions, chopped tomato, diced green chilies, red chili powder, salt and cumin powder
  • Pressure cook the dal for few minutes (2-3 whistles) and make sure not to overcook it
  • Now turn off the gas and once the steam is released from the pressure cooker, open the lid and check the consistency of the dal. Give it a nice stir to mix the ingredients
  • Once the ingredients are mixed well, take the cooker off the oven and keep aside for tempering

Step 2 – Tempering the dal

  • Take a flat, thick bottomed pan and place it on the gas oven
  • Add 2 tablespoons of ghee to it
  • Once the ghee in the pan starts warming up add chopped garlic, whole dry red chilies and turmeric powder
  • Let it all cook for 1-2 minutes in the pan
  • Now add jeera (cumin) seeds and mustard seeds
  • Once all the ingredients are mixed together and a smoky flavor starts to come out, add this tempering to the dal
  • Stir the dal well and serve it in a bowl

Jhatpat masala dal is now ready to be served and eaten with hot rice, chapati or just by itself.
